Benefactions, Baths and Boys: The Roman Bath at Isthmia at ASU Tempe Campus

March 23, 2011 from 6pm to 7:30pm
Speaker: Dr. Jayne Reinhard, Visiting Asst. Professor of History at ASUThe talk will focus on archaeological evidence for the patronage of a 2nd century CE Roman bath within the panhellenic sanctuary of Poseidon at Isthmia. The site is located at the eastern mouth of the Corinthian Canal, about 6 miles east of its administrative headquarters at the ancient city of Corinth. The building in question was lavishly decorated with sculptural ornament, a monumental black-and-white style mosaic, and an…See More

Study Abroad in Egypt, Israel and Jordan in Summer 2011

Please see the attached flier for Dr. Don Benjamin's exciting trip to the Near East. Anyone is eligible to go - all that is needed is to pay ASU summer tuition rates (which have yet to be finalized) and enroll but you do not have to be a "regular" ASU student to do so. Questions? Ask Don at dcben@asu.edu or visit the study abroad office' website:https://studyabroad.asu.edu/?go=EgyptJordanIsraeSee More

I believe I have located the building for the Feb. lecture on the campus map.  I will be parking in handicapped lot number 11 and it appears that it will be a reasonable walk to this building if I am correct.

Is anyone going to dinner after the lecture?  If so where?  Or should I eat before I come?

I just now read your letter from the fall offering help with attending. I had no indication that you had even sent it.  We used to be notified via e-mail when there was a response and anyone left a message for us.

At this point I am not sure if I will attend or not. I have not yet made motel reservations but they should not be too busy now.  I usually stay at the Motel 6 on Priest and near Broadway.

Hi, I had hoped to make the first one but will be going to Minnesota for the annual hawk migration in a few days. My health has really taken a down turn these days. And I have voluntarily restricted my driving after dark in strange places like Tempe. So I will have to work out some way of going and coming from the motel via cab to the lecture site. I do plan on attending the October talk if I can work out details. With this new setup it was very difficult for me to figure out how to e-mail anyone. But the year schedule looks good.

I do not know anyone that specializes in historic archaeology in this region. I just moved here and I usually work in the Great Basin area. Tombstone Courthouse is State run (or was before budget cuts) and they may have a Ranger that could speak about the history of mining and settlement of the West. That is the best suggestion I have for now.
If I meet someone over the course of my time in Phoenix, I will keep you in mind and see if I can get their contact information.

Hi Jayni

Thank you. I hope I'll be able to actually come to a few. My plans are a little unsettled at the moment. Happy Belated Holidays.

I'm sure by now you are deep into your break and may not even get this for quite awhile. I am finished with the planning for our Egypt trip which is less than a month away and am now just researching new (to me) sites that we will visit. I finally managed to have my H1N1 shot so no longer have to avoid crowds especially crowds of students as I was doing before. So I should be able to get to the Feb. lecture. Any progress on plans for an archaeology day? Pueblo Grande may be willing to host this as they have done so in the past. Several times they have had someone do a traditional agave roast and all present could get a taste of this treat. The person who responded mentioned atlatls. In the past we have had someone who helped children and anyone else make a simple one.
I will think of you all especially when I am cruising on the Nile in the dahabeyah, a sail powered houseboat.
Happy Winter Solstice

What's this bit about gifts? It looks like something for sale. If I attach a gift as directed. does that merely mean I add a picture to my message? Why would I want to add a picture of a pumpkin to my note?

I remembered that last semester you had a link to the AIA website so I went back to the Rome II blackboard and then surfed through the different lectures from anywhere in the country. Oh well.
The lecture on Egypt next semester looks fantastic. I'll be at that one.

I wish the lecture on Narrative, Myth, and Society in Etruscan Culture on Dec. 3 wasn't so far away! It sounds really interesting. And it's at the Getty Villa which has so many cool things relating to Rome. *sigh*

Thank You Professor! Two students from the UAA have also joined: Mitch Darnell - Vice President and Megan Steuve - Recruitment Officer. We will definitely pitch the AIA at the next UAA General Meeting scheduled for Thursday, November 12th, @ 5:00 pm and encourage the Members to join this organization as well.
