Bible On Location 2009 - Summer Course through ASU's Dept. of Religious Studies

Dr. Don Benjamin is teaching a summer session I course overseas and since it relates to archaeology and there is still time to sign up, we wanted to pass on this exciting information to our members!

Here is Don's informational letter below, and the .pdf syllabus is attached:

There is still time to earn six credits during First Summer Session (June 1-30) and take your Bible on Location with an archaeological study tour to Egypt, Jordan & Israel. A detailed brochure describing the program is attached.

Don C. Benjamin, Ph.D. is your instructor for Bible on location 2009: an archaeological study tour to Egypt, Jordan, Israel. He teaches biblical and Near Eastern studies in the Department of Religious Studies and Jewish Studies Program at ASU. He also teaches sections of The Human Event great books course and other honors-only courses at Barrett, the Honors College at ASU. The REL 315 and REL 384 courses connected to this study tour are eligible with a contract for honors credit.

Enrollment for the program remains open until April 15. To access more information about the program (including costs) & the enrollment application online, please go to http://studyabroad.asu.edu/home/EgyptJordanIsrael . Please note that there are two costs associated with the study abroad program: 1) the program fee which is $4,360.00 and includes your lodging, breakfast, some additional meals, all local transportation, all required excursions and entry fees, and two group dinners; and 2) your ASU tuition & fees for six (6) credit hours (for more information about that, please go to http://www.asu.edu/admissions/tuitionandfees/fees_summer2009.html your airfare to/from the U.S., airport transfers for those flights, passport applications fees, additional meals, books, and personal expenses.

ASU tuition will be increasing significantly in Fall 2009 (exact rates as yet to be determined), so this is a great opportunity to earn six (6) credit hours of coursework that can be used to fulfill your major/minor and/or General Studies requirements at a lower tuition rate!

Once you’ve read through the information in the e-brochure and you’re ready to sign up for the program, please click on the “Enroll Now” button in the upper right hand corner of the screen. You will be prompted to enter your ASUrite ID and password. You will then fill out an online application form and pay your $350.00 nonrefundable program deposit via Visa or MasterCard credit card online. (If the program is cancelled, you will receive your deposit back in full.) Please note that the $350.00 is not at application fee but actually a deposit against the program fee.

Non-ASU students are welcome to participate in the program but they must apply for admission to ASU for the Summer 2009 Session as non-degree seeking students. So, if you have friends who are also interested in joining you in the Middle East for the summer, please share this message with them! The Summer Admissions is available on line at http://students.asu.edu/non-degree-student-admission .

Those students who are financial aid eligible, i.e., have a 2008-2009 FAFSA on file and are currently receiving financial aid from ASU, may opt to use their aid to cover the tuition and/or program fees expenses associated with the program. You will need to contact Stefanie Bobar (stefanie.bobar@asu.edu) in the Global Studies Office via e-mail so that she can prepare a “cost sheet” (basically, a budget showing Financial Aid what your study abroad program-related expenses will be) for you. When the “cost sheet” is ready, she will contact you to stop by her office to pick that document up and hand carry it over to the Financial Aid Office for consideration. Please note that final decisions with regard to Summer financial aid will not occur until you register for your Summer coursework.

If you do not already have a passport, you will need to apply for one. We are very fortunate in that we have a Passport Office here on the Tempe Campus. For more information about their location & office hours, please go to http://ovpge.asu.edu/US_Passport_Acceptance_Office.
